Montreal born Jim Ritchie is an artist who lives in Vence, France. An artist’s website must be pleasing to the eye, yet not overpower any of the work that it is highlighting similar to a museum or gallery.
This site’s design and simple navigation was designed to do just that. It is inspired by the strong and simple cubist lines of Ritchie’s sculptures and pastels.
Sadly this site is no longer available, but images of Ricthie’s sculptures can be seen at artnet.com.
A photo of Jim Ritchie with one of his sculptures was used to serve as a launching point for the design. The clean lines of his sculptures inspire strong geometric lines, expressed by the right edge of the white sculpture pictured on the front page.
The simple and elegant navigation on this site is also inspired by Jim Ritchie's sculptures. His pieces eschew decoration and distill the human form to its simplest geometric curves and elements. In a similar way the site navigation uses whitespace to isolate the text of each link, eschewing any sort of decoration to distill the link down to its simplest element.
